BMC Name Changes - Mini Mania Inc

1952

  • The British Motor Corporation (BMC) was formed in 1952 by joining the Nuffield Organization (Morris, MG, Riley, and Wolseley) with the Austin Motor Company. It was during BMC’s reign that the Mini was designed and introduced.

1966

December

  • BMC became British Motor Holdings (BMH) on the 14th. It included Pressed Steel and Jaguar Cars.

1968

  • British Motor Holdings became British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC) when it merged with Leyland Motor Corporation (LMC).

1975

August

  • British Leyland Motor Corporation became British Leyland Limited (BL Ltd) when it was partially nationalized.

Misc.

  • British Motor Heritage started.

1978

  • British Leyland Ltd became BL PLC.

1981

  • BL PLC split and became Austin Rover Group PLC (ARG) and Jaguar Holdings.

1986

July

  • Austin Rover Group PLC became Rover Group PLC.

1988

August

  • Rover Group PLC was privatized and sold to British Aerospace on the 12th.

1994

  • Rover Group was sold to BMW.

2000

  • All of the Rover Group, except for the Mini, Triumph and Riley names and British Motor Heritage, was sold off by BMW to the Phoenix Consortium.  The sold off portion became MG Rover Group.

2001

  • British Motor Heritage sold by BMW to private investors.

2005

  • The MG Rover Group dies out because of financial difficulties. What was left was sold to Nanjing Automobile Group.
