LUCKY got delivered for final body & paint today...as my son said, "It will never go faster in reverse!"

Was to have gone May 15th...but a '64 Olds was nearing completion. Think 1960s Olds...big slab-sided behemoth. The Candy Apple Red looks fabulous...been in the shop for 8 1/2 months. So trade pro says I like you better than him, your Mini will look better.

Meanwhile we prepare the worn Aussie Mini Window Van to go to MMW in San Diego.

Thanks for breaking ground and sharing this Rick. I'm going to try to get these and add them(along with your notes) to the kit so I don't have to re-think it when the time comes. Much appreciated.

RON - the EZ LOK nutserts are BRASS...the cap screws are Stainless.

Seen this Monday morning - //www.globalindustrial.ca/contactUs - in Ontario may have the EZ LOK brass nutserts in both sizes.

Dean photo of the 8-32 & 1/4-10 nutserts & cap screws attached. Note - 1/4-10 nutserts were chamfered on leading edge whereas the 8-32 were not.

Rick,

Were the 8-32 EZ LOK's you purchased stainless? I see they are available from Spaenaur but I don't see 8-32 in stainless in their catalogue.

Yes RON you could make the 1/4"-20 studs yourself.  Cut down Stainless & get nuts to suit. You should have enough 1/4 -20 nutserts & Allen keyed SS cap screws.  They are used where you have the 'big' holes in the lower body.

You will need up to 25 more 8-32 nutserts & Allen keyed SS cap screws - IF there are only 50 in what you got from Verdis at MMW 2010.  The EZ LOK nutserts are NOT available in Canada.  If I go to MMW in SD maybe I can pick some up for you.

You will need 40 Stainless #6 x 1/2" pan head screws for the wood on barn doors.  These were NOT in the kit I got in Penticton, but readily available in Canada.  Check the perimeter of your barn doors to see how many holes you have.

I am going to put a little dab of Blue Locktite on the cap screws going into nutserts & nuts on studs when the finished wood goes on after paint.

(DEAN - I will post a photo here of the 2 sizes of nutserts & cap screws & packaging...have been busy getting ready for Pitt Meadows Day June 4th - our 75th celebration - & helping my baby brother move)

Rick,

I tried to follow this thread to ascertain what I will need over and above the kit supplied by the Woodsman but I don't have it straight. I bought my wood kit at the same time as you so my original fasteners kit should be the same as what you received. Sorry for asking this but can you summarize for me what I need to source over and above the Woodsman package. I won't be doing this soon but I'll keep a list handy for the opportune moment. I think I'll use studs in the nutserts for the wheel well locations.

Ron

Well we have the last of the Wood fitted before body/paint...need to work of barn door adjustment but that will happen after new balls go in the 4 rear hinges.

Also got out to an almost All British GARAGE S..E today and picked up enough MK I front door glass for 3 doors & 1 rear piece with slider handle.  A new parking brake cable, a parking brake handle, light bulb for the Aussie Clubman front parking light...and...a pair of complete TR7 seats which will be refinished for LUCKY.  The TR seats will be lower with recliner & good slider reach fore aft.

Standing by for the Beaumont to clear the shop.

Have heard from Craig...he will tie Special Tuning wheels on top of MGF etc. and bring my extra build bits.

Good news is Victoria Plating (top plater in B.C.)  has the 2 sets of LWB rear corner bumpers re-chromed for just under $300 Cdn.  I am a happy camper.  ROO will get a set and LUCKY will get a set.

You are in luck, Craig is coming over to the ABFM as well. We are bringing an almost matched set of MGF's for sale, both BRG, one LHD, one RHD...

Hi Sean,

You won't need more than 20 EZ LOK 1/4 -10 nutserts and Stainless cap screws (the big holes in the steel on the lower sides)...maybe 6-8 max. studs(instead of cap screws.

If using the Allen keyed cap screws then it is necessary to cut down the appropriate Allen wrench to get in behind the rear wheel arches.  If you switch out the tight spots to studs & nuts...another Allen wrench is saved!

You will need 75 EZ LOK 8 - 32 nutserts and Stainless cap screws for small holes in the steel and...depending on the shape of the wood, on the top side rail, maybe not all 75.

We found that with an irregular line of holes in the steel for the top side rails AND the angled upper wood rails that only some of the 8 - 32 nutsert locations should be used - NOT enough wood to insert the nutsert.  Your situation, wood shape might be different.

If you are coming to ABFM I will give you package & examples of what is needed.  And...you could bring my stuff from Hunter incl. the re-chromed corner bumpers....   Incidentally, the heel board I bought from you a few years ago at ABFM is now a part of LUCKY's shell!

Rick, the set we have is an original wood kit from a 60's car. It has been refinished and looks pretty good. The original screw holes are enlarged from being taken off and on. The EZ Loks look like the perfect solution, I will see if I can find them. I am not nearly as far along the project as you are. I hope to be finished the welding this week. So I can wait 10, or 40 days and still be ok I imagine. Thanks for the info!
See you at Van Deusen?

Sean, if I had known it would take 10 days to get $5 worth of nutserts & cap screws from California I would have crossed the border & gone shopping - EZ LOK wood fasteners are NOT available in Canada (at least Lower Mainland).  Check with Washington State outlets near you first...maybe you can walk on the ferry to the Olympic Peninsula.

The California kit from the woodsman need 75 8-32 internally threaded nutserts & 75 Allen keyed Stainless 8-32 cap screws.  The set had 50 of each.  The set had all the 1/4-10 nutserts & Stainless screws though a few 1/4-10 studs around the rear wheel arches would help.

My set came from the first offerings by the Woodsman Verdis Upton.  Your set may be from a different source or be a later revised kit from Upton.  The Wood is beautiful.

Where did you order the nutserts from? I will be needing some for the Watkins Woody Countryman build....

Because I could...will 'pump' out the extra grease by opening & closing, clean the assembly & paint.

(the original assembly had bone dry grease in the several cavities)

As for "barn door rattle", I noticed on the Aussie Van that the lower latch bolt hole was slightly oval versus the top hole which was not...same was true on looking at the Woody shell.

Solution, drill out a suitable nut, align at the correct angle for the barn door latch rods and weld up...no more ovaling or rattling.
