Ayayay!!! Who suggested a 20W 50 on a mini   ??????!!!!!  If you give me a reason that  motor and transmission shares same oil, thats bs,, so you are telling me that you want to protect the transmission and dont bother if the motor gets lubricated on a cold start up??  Jeeeez?? 20W is just too thick !!!!!!  Its gonna damage your engine during start up... Me? I dont care , i live in arizona but i care for our  mini brothers in Canada.  Someone needs to modify or correct the myth that 20W 50 is a must for A+ Aseries engines..

Amazing how economical my mini is in gas.  i put $3 of 87 0ctane  at $2.17/gal las night,  i drove around for about 12miles. Then today, me and wifey drove to have a breakfast in an eatery which is 17 miles one way.  Then on our way home , i took the long way which is another 22miles along the biways, and before i parked my mini in the garage i still have about 1/4 left of that 3bucks that i put.

total miles:  12+17+22= 51 miles

and considering me and wifey weighs about 280lbs combined( yes, we are skinny asians, nuff said).

i think my mini is the only mini in the history of classic minis that  runs 51 miles to the gallon.  thanks to the oil additives that i've been putting throughout the years, it saves me money in the long run.

Omg!!  Could you just imagine what a 20W do to your engine at cold start up???   Ouch!!!!
I thnk the best oil for mini during winter is  0w 50

i kinda hate  the KYB shocks that i bought 3 months ago, now it seems that it has lost it's shock absorbing ability.  i bought it for 50 bucks for all.  it has some chinese markings on the side.

i wonder if the joltfreak is still selling what they widely advertised as Honda civic brake system for $500..a lot of mini owners fall into this advertisement on their website but i think not one has ever bought one, why?? because it has never been available that's what i heard., it's just mere publicity, just an imagination, or a plan that has never materialized., maybe it doesn't fit the mini at all.
What i heard was, they(the jolt freak group) buys Civic brake set from junkyard for 20 bucks, they slice the rotor to fit the mini on their imaginary machine shop, then clean the brakes thoroughly using scrubbing bubbles for toilets, lubricate and paint it a little bit then they'll sell 'em for $500...gosh!!!

freak indeed !!!

so i see someone is complaining about an "instant power" he's getting from his mini during acceleration... i'll take that "instant power" if you don't like it..lol

my take on this issue is that since you have not driven your mini for quite a while, some dirt/debri or condensation accumulate on the clutch pad surface and that gave it a better grip on the initial take off, but after you drive it for about 5 miles, the pressumed "instant power" will disappear and it will go back to normal power. (normal power means struggling going uphill)

word for the day: "wishful thinking"

Wow! Wow! Wow!  I didnt know that it's legitimate to cut the bump stop rubber.  I need to do this on mine too because i set my hilo too low to have a slam look and i suspect that its sitting on the BS (Bump Stop) while i drive.  .. Now i think no one will dare contradict me because the cut BS (Bump Stop) idea came from an iconic prominent mm member.

Thanks for the idea!

Just want to let you guys know that i am postponing my plan for a Vtec upgrade come 2017, after watching this video below i have realized that there's indeed a car that is worse than my mini.  Now i'm beginning to Love my 998 engine. a little tweek here and there maybe i can make it faster.

Ok sir Dan, the first step i did was to tune my carb using my Gunson tuner, i can't believe i had to turn the tunning screw to the right 3times, gosh i didnt know i've been running too rich .  Here's the video, sorry again for the vertical recording.  And pardon me for the hissing noise in the background, it was the waste gate opening up, i put 25lbs of boost in there.
i wanted to also ask sir Paul's opinion but i think he's done with the minis and going to his new boating hobby.

I have told you what to do... you have to go do it. Start by tuning your engine properly, including making sure your fuel mixture is right at all engine speeds. You will also see improved performance from the engine - a 998 IS capable of street and highway speeds. Check your exhaust system does not leak, right from the cylinder head and manifold gasket to the tailpipe. Adding a catalytic converter will not help. Your tailpipe should be on the left side where the notch in the rear valance panel is, and should extend out at least an inch or two beyond the bumper. You should NOT have an oversized tailpipe - it should be the same diameter as the main exhaust pipe... 1.25" for a 998 (I think). Take off your induction snorkel and put on the standard Mini air cleaner housing and filter, and connect up your crankcase vents to capture those fumes (which are mostly exhaust fumes too ).
Check your boot lid weatherstrip is sealing properly - put strips of paper sticking out all around and close and latch the lid. The rubber weatherstrip should grip the paper everywhere. Seal any openings between the boot and the exterior, where fumes might get sucked in. Seal all openings between the boot and the cabin. You will have to take out the back seat and the side cards - there is a gap between the rear bulkhead and the outer skin, above the rear wheel well on each side, big enough to get your fingers into. Down in the bottom of the companion bin, you will probably find the bottom is open to the sill cavity, which has openings to the underside of the car. The cardboard bottom is all that covers these holes.
Make sure your driver's and passenger's door seals work properly too.

im kinda sick and tired of the my 998 engine, today i almost got into a road rage, i was on a traffic light and the guy behind me is drving a truck, green light and i accelerated, not fast enough so he was tailgating me very close while honking at me, so my asian instinct kicks in ,and i slowed down and pull to the side, letting him pass, then i honked at him using my Bosch mercedez benz horn, he passed and he gave me a middle finga',,, i followed him as i raise my middle F too...i caught him in the corner and did a fast overtake while honking, again using my three hundred dollar Bosch mercedez benz horn, he did  not react, he slowed down , he thought that i was going to pull something in my glove box, so he exit to the first street,(he didnt know that mini doesnt have glove box). i got his license plate #, so if i see him in the mall, i'll give him a little something.
Now after a long sacrifice with my underpowered 998 for almost two years, and after swallowing middle fingers morning ,noon and night from mustang,camaros,V8 drivers  throughout the years because my mini is slow, i can say, i am now ready to do the Vtec conversion this 2017.

when i saw steve alexanders video about his vtec, it was really an eye opener for me, he said that he drove his mini to canada 3k miles one way, i was like, wow!!!!  3k miles, 20 hours driving the mini? i hope my arthritis wont get worse if i do that trip...
First, i need to find a good donor car. this is my first project come 2017

ps: i may also need to invest on a good set of high quality ear plugs.,, because All of the videos of vtec mini i watch in youtube are all LOUD.

Smoke from exhaust pipe:
The exhaust from a car engine should be clear and colourless. If the engine and exhaust are cold, you may see a mall amount of water vapour (steam) - water is a big by-product of combustion. In cold weather, the steam will take longer to dissipate in air.
If the engine and exhaust are warmed up, but you still see a pale whitish exhaust, suspect that water is getting into the combustion chamber.
If you see a greyish, grey-brown or black smoke, suspect a rich mixture or other reason for incomplete combustion. Check also for the scent of unburnt fuel in the exhaust smoke.
Bluish smoke indicates oil is getting into the combustion chamber but is not being burnt up. Check for an oily film on the back of the car.

There are many possibilities.
First, you need to confirm what kind of fumes - exhaust (products of combustion), smoke from the wrong things burning (oil, additives, something touching something hot, brakes etc.) or raw gas either coming out the exhaust pipe or leaking out of the fuel tank, anywhere along the fuel line, or even at the carb or the fuel bowl overflow.
One reason you experience the problem around 40mph is aerodynamics. Mini car bodies are not anywhere close to airtight - the have many openings. When you drive forward, the boxy shape of the Mini creates low pressure areas at the sides of the car, especially at the sides of the windscreen. If your door seals leak, or your door windows are open, these low pressure areas suck air out of the car. This means replacement air gets pulled in through the holes.. through the firewall, through the floors and sills (via the companion boxes), from the boot through the rear bulkhead, and through the back of the car.
As you drive along, there is a big low pressure area behind any car, easily seen on a dusty road by the dust cloud behind the car. The Mini, being boxy, creates a good low pressure area for its size. This happens to be where the end off the exhaust pipe is, so above 40mph, you are making more exhaust AND the low pressure cells that collect exhaust and suck it forward through the car. Centre exhaust pipes and incorrectly-sized exhaust systems make it worse.
From previous posts we know you have experimented with the intake system leading to your carb. When you made changes, you affected how the carb functions, making the main jet needle less than ideal for your car. Since you need choke at certain times indicates it runs lean at those times. However, at other engine speeds it may be running rich, lean or something in between. Just changing an air filter brand can affect the carb, Changes to the exhaust system can also actually affect intake and combustion.

Start by determining what fumes you get and where the come from. Eliminate the obvious things like a leaky gas tank. You should not drive the car unless the tank is safe enough to fill right up to the lip of the filler neck without leaking or fumes in the boot. Then check your exhaust system for leaks or restrictions. Too much back pressure forces exhaust out the joints. Too little back pressure affects the engine performance. Make sure your crankcase vent hoses are connected to your intake system so those fumes get burnt and aren't leaking through the firewall.

.

Sir Dan,,, question:  i have been smelling fumes inside my mini, especially at 30-40mph  , my mini doesn't smoke. my question is am i smelling burnt gas because it's rich? or is it burnt oil? how do you distinguish the two smell if it's oil or gas? considering the fact that my mini doesn't smoke and the compression on all chambers were around 165psi.

ps: when i accelerate from stop, the car struggles a bit but when i pull the choke a bit while stepping on the gas the car pulls strong.
