Still completing rust repair patches. Just got rear seat pan rust repair fabricated finished (almost). Tyler helped install new bushings on rear subframe. I took your advice and got bolt anti-freeze and am using it.
"The Mini Guy" came for a visit last Friday and I got to take Tyler for a ride in his '66 Morris Cooper S! Lots of fun and gave me a second wind to continue pressing forward with our project.

To protect your steel work - use Waxoyl or similar AFTER paint - in the sills, around the boot inner seams, inside the rear subframe webs etc.
To protect your bolted on bits use Never Seize or similar, especially on the bolts that will go into the heel board, bolting your front subframe to the toeboard, thru the crossmember/into the towers, but elsewhere too, not where Nyloc nuts are used.
When I went to remove a rear subframe from a Mini built 20 years before, the four 5/16" bolts thru the rear trunions to the heelboard came out like they had been installed the day before. Why? The 1st owner had the Mini Ziebarted before taking delivery. In other cases, we have seen bolts snap off and heel boards need end repairs. Waxoyl up into the rear of the inner sill area to help protect those hidden bolts.

Wow. Very nice. I'm working on getting my car to live up to the condition yours was in. Very cool.
Neat to hear stories like this too.
Thanks for sharing this.

We built this Mini - a Father Son project in 1991/93 - most work done in 92/93. My son drove it for 10 years before selling - he took very good care of the Mini. It took 2nd Place Peoples Choice award at the Portland All British Field Meet at PIR in 1993.
23 years later it was at PIR for ABFM last Labor Day and I had the chance to meet the new owner & his son. Same power unit we built in 1993 with then new MG Metro 1275 & modified A Tranny, with pressurized layshaft. Same refinished alloy 100+ wheels I had done.

One 803, one 850 (in a barn somewhere about 6 miles away), four 1098s (three in a different country) more 998s & 1275s than I can remember - I stopped counting at 30...

Nope, a +20 998, a 1275 auto block & a Metro turbo...no 848s.

I sent an email to the address in your profile.
Tyler and I went on the Turkey Run, the MOALA, post-thanksgiving drive around Malibu canyons. We took my Scion Xb and enjoyed tooling around with the 4 Mini's that came out and braved the rain. It got me excited to be out doing that with Tyler soon.

I realize that I am very lucky. Tyler is a great kid. He is curious and interested. He likes to go out to the garage and tinker. He loves tools and working with me on the Mini.
Anyway, thank you for this very generous offer. I have most of 2, 850 engines. The original was in boxed in back of car and was in parts and most are rusted out. I got an "extra" 850 engine that was mostly complete but obviously got some water in cylinder #1 which is now frozen. It was rebuilt at some point as well as pistons say +030 on them.
Being a 1960 it is magic wand gear shift. Both transmissions are this type but parts are missing there too. I'm close to being ready to paint and both front and back subframes were rebuilt by Tyler and I including brakes, wheel bearings, etc. I have some rust repair to do but that shouldn't be too heavy (believe it or not).
As soon as I figure out how to pm I will do so and hope to come down your way to talk to you and your son soon. Maybe next weekend.
Thanks,
Kent

Kent-- I'm jealous that your son actually asks you to work on the mini!
Give me what you've got for a motor parts (either 850 or 998) and I'll either refurbish it myself and give it back to you in running condition or I'll put it in a Bolt-together "kit" form at whatever level of ability you want to tackle w/ your son. For example, I can just put together a shortblock and leave you two to put head on and mate it to the transmission, or I can leave just little things off like water pump and flywheel wok...
I'm in Escondido and have more used engine parts than I'll ever need. PM me and let's figure out a time for you and your son to come visit the junkyard I call home. Maybe my son could give your son a tour from his perspective!
