On the first trip to Australia I bought a small safe & bolted it through the floor under the driver's seat. Seemed like a good idea at the time...but after travelling through the New South Wales highlands towards Sidney I ended up with badly flattened old front doughnuts and I was sitting on top of the safe. (removed the safe, put somewhat better used doughnuts, hi-los and sport shockers up front)
The Aussie Van is RHD and with the stock battery position behind the driver's seat, space is cramped for pedal access. And at my advancing years I have come to take 2 Extra Strength Tylenol in the a.m each day of a long drive...maybe 1 or 2 more before sunset. Though I did not need a 2nd dosing on the more than 600 mile/1,000 kilometre drive from Yreka, Calif. to home in B.C. after MMW in San Diego.
Will consider different battery & location so I can cut away the forward part of the load bay and move the seat back in the OZ van.
Putting TR8 reclining seats in the LHD '61 Countryman build...lower seating position & longer sliders.

My seats will tilt forward for backseat access without ever touching that slide handle ... probably not a good thing ... lol

My main problem with these cars are the pedal positions /shifter.I simply HATE the pedal layout and being tall and it pushing your knees forward it bends your ankle in an unpleasant position and sometimes gets sore. What helped me on a mong drive? I put a peice of 2x4 under my heels to raise my heal and adjust the angle in my ankle.Sounds weird but it worked.I have been considering welding metal across the floor where my heels would go honestly to make it that way permanently.

Only the purists people has the right to question him because they know their thing, what's authentic and what's not.
Omg, i just read, it says it's a shoulder brace bar thing, so it means that the passengers at the back needs to wear seatbelts wrapped around their shoulders and tightened the belt with shackles while their butts were being squeezed onto that 1 inch diameter solid round bar??? that's torture! AAAnd who race their cars with passengers in the back?????gosh!! funny what people nowadays do to their minis.

I have heard different approaches to the issue.
I have heard of one owner cutting the rear bin down level with the base of the rear seat which will give you around 1.5 to 2 inches extra.
I even saw a car that the seats had been moved in closer to each other to clear the rear bins but that requires "tweaking" the rear legs a little.
If you picked up a set of the earlier 80's Mini recliner seats they are not as wide and go back further but are not comfortable for long trips.
Acura, Honda, and Miata along with other sports car seats work well but you will probably need to use a steering column lowering bracket and make up some frames (or buy aftermarket ones) as they do sit lower in the car.
BTW the slide up handle near the top of your seat releases the seat from the floor for rear seat access.

VW seat. Way back in the early 1980's I put a set of early VW GTI seats
in a Mini and they suffered the same problem, hitting the back seat storage
bin before moving or reclining far enough to the rear. My seats were VW
made by Recaro, very comfortable but too wide for a Mini. My current Mini
has Miata seats, also comfortable but narrow enough to fit a Mini.

I'm 5'9" and I've engineered an extension on the seat mount which allows me to shove the seat back until it contacts the backseat bin (which stops it). The driving position is just OK for driving around town, but I've never attempted to drive the car to a distant meet because I know my 65 year old body would not survive the trip, I'm still too close to the pedals. And I've always been a very upright position driver. My tail is as far back in the seat as it will go.
The picture attached is not very good, looking into the back seat with the passenger side (right hand drive) pulled up and forward to allow access to the back seat. But, you can see the inside edge of the driver's seat, with the dial at the bottom and the release up top (which seems to do nothing).
I guess I thought these were OEM seats, but I doubt it now. Do they look "normal" to anyone else? Would I be well served to look around for seats (Miata?) which might have a smaller footprint to miss the backseat bin or simply allow the bottom of the seat to get further back before hitting the bin?
When I get a chance, I'll take a better picture of the front seat(s) and take some measurements.
