Thanks...less than year old battery so hoping the ground wire is my issue. Will still get battery checked where I bought it.

Check that the earth strap to the engine is in good order.
Normally, you'd expect it to be the other way round - sluggish initial start and then easy restart once the oil has circulated and a bit of heat has got into everything.
The symptoms as presented would suggest that something internal could be dragging as the engine heats up...
Could be better compression once it's warm, could be tight tolerances on the crank thrust washers, could be all sorts of things.

take your battery to a parts place for a load test.
Also you could try the second start with the lights in the on position.
Bad ground will keep a battery from recharging fully. Check your ground wire in the boot, and water level in battery.
Also only use DISTILLED water to refill your battery. If you top it up, put it on a charger to bring it up to snuff. Don't put water in the battery without charging it.

1971 mini (with many newer version parts) starts easy when cold. After a drive, park it and return in 5 to 10 minutes, push the starter and will not start, hardly turns over like battery is weak. Wait 20 - 30 minutes and it cranks away and starts. Any thoughts on the problem or better yet correction?
