The metric bolt you found is probably a standard M6x1 which will look similar to the 1/4-28. Thankfully M6 is slightly smaller in diameter than 1/4" so you probably won't have a tapped hole issue requiring chasing the old threads to clean them up.
Try a 1/4-20 as things are now. If the bolt starts to bind badly, then chase the old threads in the gearbox. Don't use a tap and remove material if you don't have to.

thanks everyone!, I'm going to try a 1/4 20 and 1/4 28 and see if what fits best. I'm sure the threads are probably not in the greatest shape because someone smashed a metric bolt in the hole. If need be I can run a tap in it.

And yes, the Mini started out standard SAE thread throughout. 80s components that were sourced in Europe, like the Verto clutches went partly metric by Euro law!

When i purchased my 79 mini, it was missing the bushing that goes over the speedo pinion inside of the speedo pinion housing. The speedo was reading incorrectly. I purchased one of those bushing and put it in and found that the single bolt that holds the housing on is metric. and the threads were not in great shape. I do believe the bolts on the mini should be standard. i would like to refit the correct size bolt into the housing. Is their anybody that knows what the correct size would be .
Thanks!
John
Thanks!
