Whether it is or not it needs to work correctly or you obviously would not know when it is not charging. Doug Lawson will hopefully chime in (again Doug)

Yes, I converted from dynamo/voltage regulator. Yes, I understand the light is an integral part of the charging system when using the dynamo. My question is if the light is an important part of the alternator. It appears no. Help me!

Yes the light has to go out or it will not charge, well that is the way a normal Mini works. Maybe someone with the Saturn conversion can chime in. Did you convert over from a generator/dynamo ?

So I finally gave in to the Lucas Gods and put a Saturn Alternator in my car. WHAT A PAIN it was. The Alt I got had very wide mounting flanges. So wide that I had to cut, drill, file and grind the center so the water pump ear could fit inside. My problem is I couldn't get the dash light to come on. I finally resorted to reading the wiring diagram and systematically replacing wires until I got the light to come on. Now it won't go off. I checked the voltage at the battery. When off it's at 12. When on it's at 15. The light stays on. Is there another element that shuts the light off that's outside the wire from the Alt to the dash?

I brought the alt to Autozone. The first one didn't know JACK. The second one said he couldn't test it. The last guy (a greasy hand guy with a thousand alts in his entry) ran it up and said it worked, made current and the regulator works.

HELP! Does the light matter?
