The 2012 Focus and a 2013 Focus ST are as different as a Austin Mini 850 vs Austin Mini Cooper S. Other than the powertrain basicly the same car. Same body, dash, interior, electronics from the same factory with the same employees turning the screws.

Agreed the transmission in the 2012 has major issues and maybe the 2013 benefitted from not being a first year offering.

There is nothing magical about how the ST is built, just the same as every other Focus rolling down the line.

btw: the current Focus line was largely designed and developed in Germany.

"Hope everyone knows what the next great financial crisis will be...  There are more people buying overpriced cars getting subprime loans than ever before."

And who is to blame for this ... The buyer or the seller? I'm located in southern California and it seems like every other car is $40k+. I ask myself how is this possible? Paycheck to paycheck and still living at home is one answer. Either way I'm happy to have paid $22k with 0% financing for the 2013 ST.

I had a 09 BINI clubman for a while.  I really liked it, but the engine light would come on about once every few months.  Always a $50 copay from the mini dealership and they'd give you an almost brand new BINI for a loaner. About a month before the warranty expired we took it on for an oil change and the dealer told us the top end was shot.  $6500 worth of work to be done. (all under warranty tho.) It was at the end of the year and I was looking to trade it in. They kept it for about a month.  They told me they might not be able to finish before the new year. I explained I needed it back for a trade in before the end of the year and the sales were off.  I asked how much they'd offer for it knowing it has a fresh top and and only 45k miles.  They offered $5000 on a car they just did $6500 work on.  Gotta love it!

We have a gaggle of Focus. '16 ST '16 Titanium w/auto and a '13 SE w/5sp (the kids car, bought it used w/30k) The new part number clutch pack fixes the trans, if it gets rough again drive it harder they need to slip to stay smooth. Bring it to a dealer and have it fixed properly, some of your problems will be covered under extended warranty. You should check I believe the cat is warrantied for 100k. Also complain to Ford.

I had a 04 corolla with 180k.  Never had to do water pump or catalytic converter.  Again the ST is a different kind of car and in hindsight may be built by the same peeps but certainly not designed.
I bought the POS w/ 3k in 14 and it had been sitting on the lot for 2.5yrs.  Will never buy a car without doing a ton of practical research.

Just want to laugh.  How about this link, //bit.ly/2oIZCqk <----Stuff like this is funny to me.

I have a 13 Escape, in the cold windows stick, doors bounce open on closing when the handle sticks out, turbo overboost mil code that is a tight harness someplace, and any mil code prevents remote start from working, which makes the wife mad... goes by "lucky"

Ya. I have a 16 ford focus ST.  Love it.  It was that or a WRX. But the WRX was too expensive.  I'd get another.  Or even a Fiesta ST. I don't need that big of a car. 6 speed manual is great.

ST different kind of car.  It was designed and built by people who care.  I have a commuter car, not a hot hatch.  This is my only car that I share with my wife.  (Hence the large amount of miles in a short period of time.)  The MOKE is still my Mother's.

maj4479, You bought the wrong Focus. Yes, the semi-auto transmissions are absolute junk and it is disappointing to learn of the many issues you have had to deal with.

Now let me tell you about possibly the best new car I have purchased ... a 2013 Focus ST. Out of the 8 new cars I've bought this is the first domestic car I've parked in the garage. And I would buy it again without hesitation. Now it's not really fair to compare the two cars however they are more alike than not.

In 60k miles there have been two issues. A wire harness update (engine stumbled/hesitated) and a vacuum switching valve (which allowed me to run out of fuel before the light came on). A little over three years old now and the paint and trim are holding up well. The drivetrain (turbo 2.0 and 6sp manual) feel as strong as day one and this hotrod still handles like it's on rails.

Hopefully you won't encounter any further problems with your Focus. Or maybe it's time to take the hit and get away from the car.

My current daily driver is a 2012 Ford Focus.  By far and away the worst automotive decision I have ever made within about a month of purchase.  Unfortunately, I played financial roulette with this car and have to live with it.  (Didn't get screwed on price even buying it used, just luck at that time.)

I will admit that I am not the most mechanically sympathetic however, the car gets what it needs when it needs it.  Conventional motor oil change around every 3k miles.

Just this year 20 days into it the water pump fails at 66k.  Today check engine light came on at 72,900 on the nose.  (For those of you checking that does mean I had the oil changed 3x this year.)  Checked code and the catalytic converter failed.  Thank goodness the automatic transmission clutches are under special extended warranty.  1.)  Rides like "Murph" even though the front of the car is about 8" off the ground.  2.)  Has plastic air deflector that has to be removed every time the oil gets changed.  (Usually, have to pay extra at cheap oil change places.)  3.)  Does not have split folding rear seats.  4.)  Key/Keyfob (same unit) not intuitive.  Also, takes what seems like a few seconds for the car to unlock after the correct button is pushed.  (The analogy I came up with, "am I a carrot, a green bean, no I am supposed to open the door.)  5.)  Central door lock light misleading most of the time when in park, and running.  6.)  Traction control is extremely dimwitted and is very annoying to temporarily disable.  (Should have expected as much, but never had a car with it before.  7.)   Gas mileage IMO is mediocre at best compared to what I have had in the past.  8.)  Electronic controls go silly sometimes and don't do what they are supposed to do.  (Actually making it extremely distracting and disorientating.)  9.)  I thought I was making a sensible insurance decision, not really.  .....  Many more little things that make it very hard to live with.  There is actually one thing on this car that works good enough for me and that is the Bluetooth handsfree phone feature.  Sometimes its just funny but it does work the way I need it in order to be safe.

That was probably one of my longest rants, and I am a big boy and can take the jokes.  PLEASE MAKE ME LAUGH

Enraged FF owner Matt Jones.
