I was wrong in Su carburetors tuning tips and techniques on page 13 number one D it says set the throttle adjusting screw 1.5 turns open.

Great info Doug!  Thanks guys for all the help.  I'll play around with the 2-2.5 base setting and adjust from there.

TTF, sorry if I misinterpreted your post.  When you mentioned "flats" I thought you were referring to the HS jet adjustments.

And thanks for the compliments but I am no carb expert.  I defer to others on how to tune SUs properly!

Doug with all due respect I have an hif44 carb on my car before that I had a 40 dcoe Weber so that's all I know. I think if you look at the post you provided under tuning General hif carbs number D you will find that from the bridge you lower the needle two turns. I think one of my other Su books says two and a half turns. But I consider you the expert in these things and maybe I'm wrong. This tuning General is about three pages into the article maybe but please take a look at that site. Thanks Doug.

TTF, I believe you are thinking of the jet adjustment for the HS carbs.  The OP is asking about the HIF carbs which have an adjustment screw instead of the nut on the jet.

FAB60, the flat surface on the bottom of the main air passage going through the carb body is "the bridge".  Your starting adjustment would be down from when the jet is flush with that flat surface.

See the link below to the Burlen website (modern day owners of the SU intellectual property).  The linked page is technical data for the HIF carbs.  Go through the subsequent pages following the "next" links at the bottom of each page and you will eventually get to jet adjustment.

Sorry I can't get the correct verbage but I think it's two and a half screws down below the flat level of the carb.  If that doesn't work try two and a half Flats , but I don't think that's it. Sorry it's the best I can do tonight

Hi everyone just finished rebuilding my hif44 carb.  I wanted to know what was the standard setting it came from the factory.  I have been reading couple manuals where it says to set the mixture screw at 1-1.25mm from the bridge.  I'm not sure what the "bridge" means.  From what I'm guessing it's when the jet comes up level to the carb??  Is there another way to set the baseline setting like say 2-3 turns out from fully closed?
