I was kind of thinking it was the starter, thanks for confirming that. However, I'm NOT releasing the key before it starts making that sound!

The "spinning" sound sounds like the starter or bendix drive on the starter free-spinning after you release the key. When you engage the starter, the starting gear spins out to engage the ring gear on the flywheel. When you let go of the key, the engine stops turning and the stater gear returns to its pre-crank position, spinning while it does. If you had a starter where the bendix and starter gear were not moving properly, you'd ge the same "spinny" sound.

Thank you both for the response. I gave it a few whaps this morning, checked it was getting voltage again, and in the process realized he had the leads reversed (difficult to see the +/- printed on the pump). After correcting that I hear the pump and it's getting fuel at the carb. Engine sounds like it fires, but then I hear a sound I don't know, like something disengaging/spinning. +1.  Fuel pump should be making noise. SU pumps were notorious for their relays sticking. That is the reason to hitting the pump. Many owners switched to a Facet electric pump. SU pumps were round cylinders. The facet's were small rectangles and made a constant clicking sound. The SU pump would make a couple of clicking sounds when you first turn the key. That's because it is pressurizing the fuel line and then click only to meet demand. The facet would make the click all the time.

To test: disconnect the fuel hose near the carb. Put an extension hose onto the fuel line or make sure you can collect the gas pumping out.  Otherwise you'll have a mess or perhaps worse. If the pump is working; the gas will come out fast.

If it has an original style SU fuel pump it will not be quiet. Tapping (hitting) the body of the pump with a broom stick or soft hammer is a good place to start.

Hi folks, long story short, I've inherited my dad's 67 Moke and am trying to get it running for the first time in about a year and a half. It has a 1275 in it and everything is standard, original set up so far as I know. Bear with me please... I know a little bit about cars but I'm definitely learning as I go here (and struggling) so any help would be appreciated. I've been consulting my Haynes manual and forums and videos online but I'm not finding much about diagnosing fuel issues beyond checking gas is getting to the carb/listening for the pump.

Here's what's happening: after some basic maintenance (cleaned battery terminals, charged battery, checked oil and coolant levels, pumped gas tank empty and added fresh fuel, put a little oil down the spark plug holes and cleaned off spark plugs, cleaned off distributor terminals), the car is cranking well. If I spray some starter fluid in the carb it starts to fire and I even got a little smoke out the tail pipe. I disconnected the fuel line into the carb and had someone turn the ignition to on and then turn it over and I didn't get any fuel out. I confirmed 12v is getting to the (electronic) fuel pump. I can't say I hear the fuel pump doing anything but wondered if it's just really quiet. So my question is... where should I go from here to keep diagnosing this?
