Thanks Jemal....I am OK with it and happy to stay with the build as is. The differential definitely did not come with the transmission as it is painted in Morris green while the gearbox is gold.

The 1128 box is a four synchro remote shift, so if you have a magic wand shifter on it, somebody built that!  That is a very good gearbox, far better than any of the 3-synchro type.  They never came with a 3.1, in fact you must modify the big center bearing's retaining collar on most of them to even fit the 19 tooth pinion.

You might see if a former owner has the original remote shift parts forgotten in their garage....

While swapping a magic wand lump for an Austin 1100 lump with remote shift, (back about 45 years ago ) I noticed the bottom end of the magic wand was very similar to the bottom end of the remote gearshift stick. Out of curiosity, I installed the wand in the remote and it actually worked. Of course that put the shift knob somewhere about ear level (visions of Ratfink). I did not try to drive it that way!

Chuck, I was looking the other day for one.
Ebay UK has some also Mini Spares sells a Speedwell copy of one. I also found two in a package for sale different designs/dimensions but cannot remember the site right now.

After the extension was screwed onto the arm, the knob was then screwed onto the end of the extension.

I have one I use on one of my cars still running a magic wand, and I've used them in the past. I just don't see them as easy to find, now.

Steve, tell me the casting number found on the gearbox behind the engine oil filter (if still bolted together) and I'll tell you what you have!

A common mistake -- thinking shifting can be faster by installing a shorter arm or one of the so-called "quick shifts." A street Mini's gearbox limits how fast a shift can be made without causing internal damage. One can shift gears safely just as fast with a magic wand as with the most expensive "quick shift." The difference is in how fast (because of how far) the shift lever end can move. One could say that "quick shifts" are really slow shifts, with the remote shift lever falling somewhere in between.

I was hoping to get a somewhat faster/slicker shift with a much shorter throw. As I understand it (maybe incorrectly) the early coopers had the same body shell with a remote shift which is what I wanted to replicate.
I still don't know what the transmission is. Clearly it is not original to the MG1100 engine but I am almost ready to remove the transmission and will know more once I can see the internals. A previous owner has put a lot of work and money into the mechanicals, I am still investigating.

If I understand what you are looking for, there used to be a short extension that could be screwed onto the magic wand shift lever giving it two or three more inches in length. I did a quick look and didn't see any being advertised, but I bet they still are available.

It is possible to add the remote diff cover and shift extension housing in place of the magic wand style.  You'll need to make a new hole in floor for the new shifter location, and of course you have to find all the needed parts.  Often we have all the needed bits, but it's still hit and miss making a different diff cover fit a particular case.

A valid question is why?  If you have an old 3 synchro box, just changing to a remote shift assembly isn't going to make much difference.  If you consider the cost and work involved, it might be cheaper to just replace the whole box with a much stronger and much better shifting 4-synchro rod change gearbox!

Unless you can find a SPQR gear shift kit somewhere you will need a new gearbox case with remote housing or a complete rod change gearbox.

Mini's are like buses they come along in a bunch

My engine has what looks to be the original type of magic wand lever/diff cover. It has just two bolts holding the plate which holds the lever in position. Is there a remote change extension available that will fit this diff case or will I need to change the diff cover with a later one?
Thanks for your help
